What a Week!

All I can say is, Wow!  What a week I’ve had.  I’m not complaining for a minute, but just thought I’d share…

I was at my son’s high school golf tournament (his team came in 1st place) last Tuesday when I received a call that my dad was back in the emergency room after his pacemaker went off.   He’d had the same experience the week before when I was in Hawaii for spring break.  The first stint resulted in surgery to open an artery in his heart that was blocked.  This time was different.  The rhythm of his heart was basically out of whack and would not calm down.  To resolve this the doctors in the emergency room put him on a ventilator to calm his heart.  Surgery was scheduled for 8 am on Thursday to basically cauterize certain damaged areas of his heart so that they are no longer alive and causing rhythm problems.  Surgery took 6 hours.  I have been at the hospital almost nonstop from Thursday morning until Sunday afternoon, including 2 overnights to stay with him.  Sleeping in an ICU unit in a hospital is not really sleeping, as I’m sure you can imagine.

Dad came off of the ventilator on Friday evening.  He was almost immediately on his ipad looking up his friend’s contact information so that I could call them for him.  He will begin some physical therapy today.  He is one of the most difficult patients that I’ve ever been around.  He’s a high anxiety kind of person.  Hmmm, wonder where I got that from?

I flew home last night and was so excited to sleep in my own bed!  I had a good sleep for the first time in a long time.  Now I get to worry about my dad from a distance.  I’m really good at worrying.  I will keep you updated on his status on my Twitter feed as I find out more news from my family in the coming days.
